The time after the exposure matters
If there was sex during which HIV transmission was possible, PEP may be suitable for you. It works best when started early and must start no later than 72 hours after the exposure. You do not need to wait for symptoms or a test result before seeking a consultation. Whether PEP is needed is assessed by a doctor.
What are the next steps?
The steps are: possible HIV exposure → medical assessment → PEP if indicated → follow-up and testing. The usual course is 28 days. A doctor prescribes and monitors it. If more than 72 hours have passed, a consultation is still useful – for testing and for future protection.
