The CheckPoint Sofia website provides understandable information about sexual health, HIV, viral hepatitis, other sexually transmitted infections, testing and prevention. Its purpose is to help you ask informed questions and find an appropriate next step.

Do not wait for symptoms or an online questionnaire result. If the centre is closed, seek an emergency department or an appropriate healthcare facility. If more than 72 hours have passed, still seek assessment for testing and next steps; do not treat that timeframe as a reason to go without care.

Understanding tests
A negative result relates to a specific test, sample and point in time. Testing too soon after contact may not rule out infection. The window period depends on the infection, method and individual situation. A medical professional determines whether and when repeat testing is needed.
A reactive screening result must not be interpreted on its own as a final diagnosis; the applicable confirmatory algorithm must be followed. Similar symptoms can have different causes, and some infections have no symptoms. Do not draw conclusions about a partner or the cause of an infection solely from general text or a single result.
